Over here at Hart & Lock Design, we LOVE tablescapes! It’s a non-permanent way to have a little fun with design!
With Thanksgiving in ONE WEEK, we thought we’d share 5 Easy Thanksgiving Tablescapes and give some helpful tips so you can dress your table to IMPRESS this year!
#1 Casual Elegance
Thanksgiving always feels a little less formal than Christmas or Easter, although we do love a casual Christmas or Easter table! In this casual and elegant table setting, we upped the ante by layering in some elegant fine china and small gold accents on top of casual pieces such as a black gingham tablecloth and natural woven placemats. Just like adding a mixture of unique pieces to your home’s decor creates interest, mixing up styles in your table setting makes it exciting!
#2 An Unexpected Color
We all know the go-to colors for Thanksgiving are the traditional fall colors: orange, yellow, brown, and burgandy. FORGET the expected! Try using an unexpected color like blue or green and add traditional elements such as pumpkins or gourds. We chose blue for our next tablescape to match our client’s navy blue walls and the giant light blue pumpkin they had used for front porch decoration. The gold chargers and silverware was a nod to fall colors and also coordinated with the light fixtures in the room. Pulling pieces from around the house is a fun way to tie in the color as well. The decorative blue and white chinoiserie bowls normally used on some living room bookshelves made great vessels for Thanksgiving sides!
#3 New Traditional
One the other hand, using traditional colors is nostalgic and homey! In our next setting, we used all the traditional colors to create a warm and comforting tablescape. We balanced a boldly patterned plaid tablecloth with solid colored plates in two different colors. Mixing the colors of the plates and bowls gave the traditional look a more modern edge! And just like in your home, mixing metals is OK as long as you don’t go overboard. We chose gold silverware and copper mugs to blend in with the color scheme and to add some whimsy. And if you are wondering what that fluffy almost wheat-like arrangement is, it’s cattail tops from the front yard! One of our favorite tricks is to scavenge the yard and find interesting “greenery” to set the table. We also grabbed the pinecones from the yard which could be used as holders for name or menu placards.
#4 Neutral Glam
Everyone has a white tablecloth and white or cream dinner plates and that’s a great place to start when thinking about setting your Thanksgiving table. And having pieces that can transition to any holiday or dinner party is an economical way to invest in new pieces. A burlap runner can be used for any occasion and dressed up, like in this setting, or down! Even the fun plates can be mixed in for other holidays - this homeowner usually used these plates for New Year’s Eve! By adding in the fall colored faux greenery as a centerpiece and on each place setting as well as an orange serving bowl and wooden platter, the entire tablescape feels Thanksgiving! P.S. The magnolia leaves are real and we just snipped them off the tree and layered them in a pattern!
#5 Simply Modern
Gray has been used as a consistent base in decorating for years now so we decided to use gray and white as our base for the last tablescape. It’s such a clean and modern look! This base could easily transition to a Christmas setting or Easter setting with a few small tweaks. Or, really, ANY dinner, brunch, or lunch gathering! To make it feel Thanksgiving, we used mustard colored napkins and yellow flowers. You already know we love grabbing greenery from the yard, but another easy way to stretch your floral budget is by purchasing one or two large bouquets from Costco or your local grocery store and breaking it apart in to smaller groupings. This way you can use smaller vases down the center of the table.
We hope you feel inspired to create a MEMORABLE Thanksgiving tablescape!
